KanColle Guide for Beginners: Ships of Priority to level and succeed in Events Death Usagi's KanColle News & Guides Wednesday, September 14, 2016 Reading time: 4 minutes Public This is a list of ships for Beginners which they should prioritize getting, and level to Kai Ni. This article is meant to be a rough guideline to help you determine which girls you should be leveling. Included in this is which girls you should be using your limited blueprints, action reports and prototype catapults on. Event-only girls are listed separately due to their rarity. Any girl not listed here can be considered low priority.

Kantai Collection(KanColle) belongs to that family of intellectual property where you’ve probably heard of it before, and almost certainly seen some fan art, but have never cared enough to actually play the original course material. Other similar game franchises including Touhou and Granblue Fantasy. The common element, and arguably the most important element, among each of these brands is their monolithic cast of colorful characters.

Kantai Collection is certainly no exception, so I thought I would give you guys my top 5 favorite ship girls from Kancolle. Keep in mind that I’ve played a lot of the game and have a lot of bias towards certain girls that frequently clutch battles for me and bias against some girls that I simply can’t craft no matter how much I spam their recipe. With that said, let’s get into the list.

Mogami, on top of just being a very reliable aviation cruiser, is very memorable for having a hilarious tidbit of history in the war. She had a bad habit of accidentally colliding with other ships. She had a collision with Mikuma while trying to avoid torpedos, randomly collided with an oil tanker for no reason, and collided with Nachi in battle. After the third collision, she was scuttled and finally sank.

Plenty of her lines in the game refer to this misfortune such as, “I’m Mogami. It’s alright, I won’t collide with anyone this time. Really!” and “No, this isn’t collision… damage,” and “Going in for repairs. Why do I keep running into friends…? This sucks.” There’s just something very endearing about her clumsiness.

Hibiki’s backstory is illustrated very beautifully through how remodeling her to her “Kai Ni” form turns her name into Верный. This parallels how she was given to the Russians after World War II, and served in the Russian navy under this new name. I just think that her conflicting identity as a Japanese and a Russian is just a little tragic. But when you hear her quote when she sinks as Верный, I think it’s clear where her loyalties truly lie.

I have little reasons to justify this spot but it’s not like I could just not include my number one KanColle waifu on the list. She’s drop-dead gorgeous and she’s got that lovely onee-chan personality. During the war, she was also the one that frequently ended up damaged as opposed to her sister Zuikaku. While this is probably not how it worked in real life, I like to imagine her constantly taking the bullet because she loves her sister. Her entire being is just so soothing, and my greatest regret in life is that I’ll never be able to beam myself into the 2D plane and marry her for real.

Back on the topic of collisions, Abukuma is one of my favorite ships due to her relationship (get it? hahaha) with Kitakami and Ushio. So apparently, Abukuma’s bangs represent the bow on the real ship. In 1930, Abukuma suffered critical damage to her bow due to Kitakami accidentally ramming into her, and it seems Abukuma’s been holding a bit of a grudge. She has great lines that reflect this like, “Uwa-wa! Please don’t touch me too much! My bangs are fragile you know! Admiral, you’re a bit like Kitakami.”.

Abukuma’s line when she sinks is also very poignant. When she sank, a majority of her crew found refuge on Ushio. So when Abukuma sinks in the game, she says, “I’ve been badly damaged… hey, Ushio-chan, are you by my side? Can I leave the rest with you…?”.

Yukikaze’s history from World War II is somewhat comical and inspiring, but also very tragic. Despite being placed in peril all throughout the war, she managed to survive the war along with Hibiki. Because of this, she became known as both a lucky ship, but also a god of death. This story is best illustrated by the fan comic, “Yukikaze Will Not Sink”. I highly recommend giving it a read through. The ending is a little cheesy, but I like it.

I also love how they integrated her history into the game by giving her the most base luck in the game. Despite calling herself useless in that comic, her torpedo critical hits really pack a punch.

Here are a few ships that I feel deserve some recognition but for whatever reason, just couldn’t make it in the top five.

Kongou

Kongou is practically the face of KanColle at this point due to her eccentricity, passionate English outbursts, and reliable nature. Considering how much I love hearing her scream, “Burning Looooooove!!!” in every fight, you’d think I have her somewhere in my top 5. Such a shame that whenever I set her as my flagship, she has to obnoxiously screech and whine about random stuff at the top of her lungs.

I-168 (Pronunciation: Imuya)

This slot is more so memorial service for a fallen comrade than a girl that I actually like. You see, Imuya was the first submarine I ever got while playing KanColle. The chance of getting one is just so low that getting your first one is a huge milestone as a KanColle player. I struggle to think of another moment in gaming that’s given me a greater sense of euphoria than when I first obtained her. Yet, at the same time, I also struggle to think of a greater moment of misery and dread than when I lost her.

I was playing late at night and studying simultaneously, not paying attention to the game. I randomly decided to advance forward while Imuya was taiha’d (critically damaged) and she sunk. Unlike every other gacha game in the world, there is permanent death for the ship girls. This was actually the most depressed I’ve been in my life.

So yeah, as far as I know, there’s not too much special about Imuya over any of the other submarines, but she still has a special place in my heart forever.

So those are my favorite ship girls from KanColle. I’d like to note that I stopped playing for about two years, and only just started playing again recently. This means I know nothing about any ships released during that time. If they released any cool ships during this time, let me know down in the comments. Also, if there were just any other ships you’d like to see here, let me know.

I have been an avid fan of anime and Japanese media as a whole for the better part of the past decade. Recently, I have experienced a very limited amount of anime in favor of manga and light novels. I don’t consciously prefer drama stories, but it is the genre I rate most highly. I’m a sucker for a good tear-jerker. I am also a huge fan of playing rhythm games (Osu! in particular) and Dota 2.
